The full recteq lineup is on the floor at our BBQ Center at 971 Topsy Lane in Carson City — lids you can lift, grates you can feel, and staff who cook on these things at 4,700 feet. We assemble and deliver, too. |
There is a particular kind of customer who walks into our BBQ Center already knowing exactly what they want, and for the last couple of years a lot of them have been asking the same question: do you carry recteq?
Now we do. Wickstrom Ace Hardware is a Diamond-level recteq dealer, which means the full lineup sits alongside the Traeger and Weber pellet grills we already stock. If you have been following recteq from a distance, watching the forum threads and the YouTube shootouts and wondering whether the hype holds up, you can now put your hands on one about ten minutes from downtown.
That matters more than it sounds like it should, and here is why.
Why recteq built a reputation on steel and heat
recteq spent most of its life as a direct-to-consumer brand. You bought one online, it showed up on a pallet, and you assembled it in your driveway. That model built a fiercely loyal owner base, and it also meant almost nobody got to see one before buying.
What that owner base talks about, consistently, is build quality. Popular Mechanics put it plainly after testing one against a competitor: recteq's build quality is noticeably heftier… The lid is heavier, and the body is thicker. Over on the Pitmaster Club forums, an owner who ran both side by side wrote that the heavier build provided more consistent temps.
Pick one up and you can feel what they mean. The Backyard Beast 1200 runs two quarter-inch stainless cooking grates and a cast iron heat deflector. Not stamped, not coated. The ignition system is rated past 100,000 lighting cycles, which is a strange spec to advertise until you have replaced an igniter on a cheaper grill in February.
The second thing owners bring up is heat, and this is where the assumption that a pellet grill is only a smoker falls apart.
Most pellet grills top out somewhere around 450 to 500 degrees, which is fine for a pork butt and disappointing for a ribeye. The Bullseye Deluxe 380BD reaches 1000°F. recteq describes it as combining "the convenience of a wood pellet grill with the searing power of direct heat cooking," and at that temperature you are not approximating a sear, you are getting one. The X-Fire Pro 825 is built on the same idea.
Worth being precise here, because the internet is not: that 1000-degree number belongs to the searing models. The Backyard Beast 1200 runs 180°F to 700°F, which is still well above the pellet-grill norm and enough to finish a steak properly, but it is not a Bullseye. Different tools, different jobs.
What a Diamond-level dealer actually changes
Dealer tiers usually mean nothing to the person buying. This one has a practical edge, mostly because of that direct-to-consumer history.
You can see the grill before you own it. Lid weight and grate thickness are things you evaluate with your hands in about four seconds and cannot evaluate from a product photo at all.
We assemble it and we deliver it. A Backyard Beast is a substantial piece of equipment, and "some assembly required" on a pallet in your driveway is a different afternoon than having it arrive built.
And when something needs sorting out, you talk to somebody here. Warranty questions, a part, a controller behaving oddly in January: that is a conversation at the counter rather than a support ticket and a shipping label.
We also stock the pellets, and we refill and exchange propane for the gas grill you are probably keeping anyway.
Which recteq fits the way you actually cook

We carry the full recteq lineup through Ace, so the useful question is not which grill is best. It is which one matches how you cook. Same conversation we have about Weber and Traeger, and the honest answer moves around depending on the person asking.
If this is your first pellet grill. The Patio Legend 400 or 600 is the sane starting point. Pellet grills are genuinely easier than charcoal, and starting mid-sized means you learn the thing without wrestling a 1,200-square-inch cooker for a Tuesday chicken.
If you cook for a crowd, or you cook overnight. The Backyard Beast 1200 gives you 1,220 square inches across two racks and a 30-pound hopper rated for roughly 30 hours of continuous cooking. In practical terms that is nine pork butts, or eight racks of baby backs, and a brisket you can start at ten at night without setting an alarm to feed it. The Deck Boss 800 and 900 sit a step below on capacity.
If you want to sear as much as you want to smoke. Bullseye Deluxe 380 or X-Fire Pro 825. This is the category most people do not realize exists. You get wood-fired flavor at low temperatures and genuine steakhouse heat when you want it, in one machine, which means your gas grill stops being mandatory.
If patio space is the constraint. The Bullseye footprint is small and the Patio Legend 400 is built for exactly this. Neither asks you to give up a quarter of the deck.
If the app matters most to you. Every recteq here is WiFi-enabled, and worth knowing: the Backyard Beast runs full onboard push-button controls too, so the app is optional rather than load-bearing. If deep app integration and a large recipe ecosystem are what you want, that is a real conversation to have, and it is one reason we still stock Traeger. Different people want different things from the same twelve hours of cooking.
Come look at the BBQ Center and put your hands on a few. It takes about five minutes to work out which one is yours.
Pellet grilling at 4,700 feet
Carson City sits around 4,700 feet, and almost nothing written about pellet grills accounts for that. Every buyer's guide online is written at sea level.
Three things change up here.
Water boils at roughly 203°F instead of 212°F. The stall behaves differently, anything braising reduces faster, and internal temperature becomes more reliable than clock time. Cook to temp, not to a schedule from a Texas recipe blog.
The air is dry, which cuts both ways. Meat surfaces dry out faster, so spritzing and wrapping earn their keep more than they would in Georgia. The upside is that pellet storage, which is a genuine headache in humid climates, is far less trouble here. Keep them sealed and off the concrete and they will be fine.
Wind is the real variable. Not the cold. A steady Washoe Valley wind pulls heat off a cooker and forces the controller to work harder, which burns more pellets and slows recovery every time you open the lid. Heavier steel holds temperature better in wind, which is a large part of why the build-quality argument matters more here than it does in a magazine test.
Our staff cook on these in this climate. That is a different kind of advice than a spec sheet.
Common questions
Where are recteq grills made? recteq is headquartered in Evans, Georgia, where the company was founded. Ask us in store for current details on any specific model.
Is a pellet grill only good for smoking? No, and this is the most persistent myth about them. Standard pellet grills run roughly 180°F to 500°F, which covers smoking, roasting and baking. recteq's searing models reach up to 1000°F, which puts a proper crust on a steak. One machine, both jobs.
How long does a hopper of pellets last? It depends on temperature, weather and the grill. The Backyard Beast 1200's 30-pound hopper is rated for around 30 hours of continuous cooking, which covers an overnight brisket comfortably. Wind and low temperatures shorten it.
Do I need WiFi to use one? No. Every recteq we carry is WiFi-capable, and the Backyard Beast also has onboard push-button controls, so you can run it without ever opening the app.
Can you deliver and assemble it? Yes. That is part of what buying from a dealer gets you rather than a freight pallet.
Come see one
Stop by the BBQ Center at 971 Topsy Lane, or browse the pellet grills and smokers we carry first. Bring the question you have not been able to answer online — lid weight, sear temp, whether the app matters. Ten minutes with your hands on a few grills settles it faster than a month of reading reviews. |
